Lutz claims USGA Senior Amateur

Written by Bob Oliver on .

Chip Lutz is no stranger to a national senior championship, having posted the Canadian and British senior amateurs on his resume. But the Reading, Pa., native had a big hole on that resume: he had never won his own national championship.

That is no longer the case, as Lutz added the United States Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship to his portfolio with a 5 and 3 victory over Tom Brandes in the tournament finals at Hidden Creek Golf Club. Lutz was steady throughout the week.

Lutz won the 2010 and 2011 Canadian Senior Amateur and the 2011 and 2012 British Senior Amateur championships. He battled Hidden Creek to a 1-under-par total through the 15 holes of the final match.

Newtown's Glenn Smeraglio advanced to the round of 64, but lost there to North Carolina's Gary Robinson, 4 and 3, despite being just 1-over-par through the 15th hole.

Hidden Creek was a spectacular test for the players, garnering rave reviews.
