Middletown Country Club

Middletown is a compact 80 acres of challenging golf, with rolling hills and large specimen trees that have watched many golfers travel its fairways over time. It has retained its old time feel with tees and greens in close proximity, allowing golfers to walk the course if they choose.

Seriously, what was Mickelson thinking?

Okay, what was Phil Mickelson thinking?

The coveted United States Open Golf Championship was his to lose, which he inexplicably did.

Lefty battled a wayward driver the entire final round, hitting just 2 fairways, yet still was a stroke in front of the field standing on the 72nd tee box. A par would win the Open, a bogey would tie Geoff Ogilvy in the clubhouse.

Clearly Mickelson, who recently won the Masters and is arguably the second best golfer in the world, knew what he had to do.

Mickelson loves AZ, CA courses

There is an old adage that implies there are different horses for different courses.

In golf, that’s true.

Well, maybe not for Tiger Woods, who wins anywhere any everywhere. But even Tiger has a mastery over the Firestone Country Club where he’s won 5 of his 54 victories.

Some players like courses which are long because of their precision driving ability, others, like the “Boss of the Moss” Lauren Roberts, bring their A Game to courses with treacherous greens. Still others like courses which have a certain feel: dry hard layouts, courses in the desert, courses in the southwest or southeast.
